Ecosocialist WG Co-Chair

Candidate Statement

The Ecosocialism WG is still in its infancy. Most of our WG’s current work consists of research and writing for the Mass Transit and Public Power campaign reports, especially as the weather has cooled and opportunities for outdoor volunteering have dried up. As the weather (and local politics) heats up, I will spur participation in this WG in two ways.

First, I want the chapter to participate in the Adopt-a-Spot program, which will give us a monthly opportunity for members to clean up and beautify a small patch of Cincinnati. Besides giving members something to do for an afternoon, enriching our social and community ties, we’ll be able to let the public know who exactly is cleaning up their parks with a street sign for our chapter.

Second, I will begin a climate-centric campaign in Cincinnati. While specifics will need to be worked out with respect to timing (especially with respect to Olivia Merrill’s City Council run) I believe external-facing campaigns that get the membership excited and the working class on our side is key to building DSA and building power in Cincinnati. One potential opportunity is in the works with Civic Cincinnati’s campaign to improve bus stop infrastructure. Developed independently, this campaign and the Mass Transit campaign I’ve been working on for the past five months share many similarities. If Civic Cincinnati is willing to form a coalition for this effort and if the chapter determines the timing is right, this could be a fruitful way to build a relationship with a local climate org, win material gains for the Cincinnati working class, and empower the chapter to go further, faster, and higher.

I am the best candidate for the role of Ecosocialism co-chair due to my leadership experience from my At-Large position on SC and , and because I believe an intersectional model is the only one which can adequately address the climate crisis before it’s too late.

An important part of being co-chair is knowing your way around the chapter, not just to accomplish your own external political goals, but to guide and encourage others in the achievement of those goals as well. As Member At-Large on the Steering Committee, I’ve had greater exposure to the inner workings of the chapter that can be somewhat opaque to members that aren’t as plugged in. Part of the way in which I can be valuable to members of this WG is by advising them on relevant bylaws that, for example, control how we relate to and work with other organizations in the area.

Another important part of chairing is the process itself in WG meetings. I do a good job of keeping meetings on-track and properly ordered so every member, not just those most apt to dominate a conversation, can contribute to the WG’s success. As the next elected co-chair for 2026, I will improve those skills further so the Ecosocialism WG runs smoothly and effectively as it moves towards its goal of a sustainable socialist future.

Finally, I believe in the intersectional model that this WG operates under is and will remain the best method of tackling the polycrisis of climate change. As a global problem with many causes, the climate crisis cannot be averted through technology, or governance, or social changes alone. As this challenge has many facets, so too must we confront it through many different avenues, and confront it with urgency. As the biggest crisis faced by humanity, we cannot afford to leave our cards on the table, but instead confront this crisis, and the capitalist system that spawned it, with State Power, Strike Power, and Street Power. So, in whatever we do, we must bring together all kinds of different organizers to tackle this problem.

If you agree with this vision for the Ecosocialism WG and understand the stakes we face over the next few years. I would be honored if you would vote for me, Mike Viozzi, as one of your Ecosocialism Working Group Co-Chairs for 2026.
